Prostitution is illegal in the Philippines, but it is, however, tolerated. According to a report, the country, along with other Asian nations such as Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia, are a global hub for child prostitution. According to separate research, there are more than 60,000 Filipino girls who are s*x workers. This is majorly due to poverty. But for the 13-year-old “Anna” (a pseudonym given to conceal her identity), working as a prostitute at such a very young age is her way to help her family.

On the GMA-7 documentary show “Reel Time” that airs every Sunday, Anna revealed how she became a s*x worker at only 13. She shared:

“Dun po ako nagsimula, yung nakagalaw po sa dalawa kong kaibigan. Ano po, yun na, umaano na po ako ng customer, kumukuha, nagpapabayad na. Hinahawakan po nila yung kamay ko. Tapos inano, yung bunganga ko, tinakpan. Dun po ako nagsimulang mag-ano ng, magtrabaho nang may bayad.”

Anna shared that she earns an average of PHP 2000 per night and serves around 10 customers. But out of all the money that she works for, she only gets PHP 20 as she gives all the money to her parents. She said:

“Tuwing gabi po, sampu na mga lalaki customer ko. Ang kinikita ko po dalawang libo, tapos binibigay ko po sa nanay at sa papa ko po. Lahat. Binibigyan lang po nila ako ng bente pesos.”

In the documentary, she stated that she’s not afraid to get sick. Anna shared that she works as a prostitute to be able to give the money to her parents and help her younger siblings. She said: “Ginagawa ko po ito, tinitiis para sa mga kapatid ko. Para may pangkain [sila].”
